Elderly man missing, presumed drowned, in canoeing accident near Squamish, B.C.

SQUAMISH, B.C. – An elderly canoeist is missing and presumed drowned after flipping his small craft while paddling in waters around Squamish, B.C.

Officials with the Rescue Co-ordination Centre say at least two witnesses sounded the alarm just before 7 p.m. Monday night.

Both reported seeing the man canoeing in Blind Bay, which leads to the head of Howe Sound, but when they looked again, the canoe was overturned and the man had vanished.

Several boats and a helicopter scoured the area, but the search was halted after dark.

An RCMP dive team has been called to continue the recovery effort.

The file has now been handed over to the Mounties as a missing persons case. (CKNW)
