‘Anne of Green Gables,’ two kids’ TV series take home Shaw Rocket Prize

OTTAWA – One of Canada’s most famous literary characters, a slug wrangler and stories from a little girl’s vociferous imagination, took home this year’s Shaw Rocket Prize honours.

The award for Canadian kids and youth programs was handed out Wednesday in an evening ceremony hosted by “Degrassi: Next Class” actress Soma Bhatia at Ottawa’s Shaw Centre.

One of the winners was “Anne of Green Gables,” a feature film retelling of L.M. Montgomery’s book, along with TV series “Slugterra” and “Kate & Mim-Mim.”

All three were chosen through an online panel of children from across the country asked to vote for entertainment they felt delivered the “best overall audience experience,” on TV screens, tablets and phones.

The list of nominees was whittled down by a jury earlier this year.

“Anne of Green Gables” stars Ella Ballentine as the young orphan and Martin Sheen in the role of Matthew Cuthbert.

“Slugterra” is an adventure series about a 15-year-old boy and his arsenal of slugs with magic powers.

“Kate & Mim-Mim” follows the tales of a little girl who joins her stuffed bunny on journeys to a fantasy land.

All three programs were awarded $25,000 each.
