Nova Scotia government to cover cost of gender reassignment surgeries

HALIFAX – Nova Scotia’s health minister says the province will soon begin funding gender reassignment surgery.

David Wilson’s announcement came after a meeting earlier today with the Nova Scotia Rainbow Action project, an advocacy group that has criticized the government for not covering the operations.

Wilson says he made the decision after reviewing medical evidence and the policies of other provinces that fund this procedure.

He says the section of the physician’s manual that prohibits funding for the surgery will be immediately removed.

Nova Scotia will be the eighth province to cover gender reassignment surgery.
