Prize-winning author-journalist Barton Gellman writing book on ‘surveillance-industrial state’

NEW YORK, N.Y. – A Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist is working on a book about the “surveillance-industrial state” that emerged after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Penguin Press announced Thursday that it had acquired a book by Barton Gellman, a contributing editor at large for Time magazine and a former Washington Post reporter. The book, which Penguin said will be based on years of reporting, is currently untitled and does not have a release date.

The announcement follows last week’s reports that the government was compiling a vast database of phone and Internet records.

Gellman won a Pulitzer and George Polk Award in 2008 for a series of articles he wrote for the Post about then-Vice-President Dick Cheney. The articles became the basis for a bestselling book, “Angler.”
