WINNIPEG – Manitoba is abuzz about the possible return of a significant Metis artifact.
The bell of Batoche hung in the Saskatchewan community of the same name when the Metis were defeated during the Northwest Rebellion in 1885.
It was taken by federal troops and eventually displayed as a trophy in an Ontario legion hall before it was mysteriously removed in 1991.
Now, a Manitoba Metis group is hinting it has plans for the bell’s return.
Group spokesman Guy Savoie (GEE sav-WAH’) says there’s to be an announcement on Friday about what will happen to the bell and where it’s going.
He says the bell is an important part of Metis history and it should be treated accordingly.
