Wife killer gets life sentence, with no chance of parole for 16 years

SURREY, B.C. – A man who stabbed his wife to death at her workplace in Surrey, B.C., has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 16 years.

Manmeet Singh pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder in the death of 24-year-old Ravinder Bhangu at a Punjabi newspaper office.

Police said she was already dead by the time officers arrived at the Sash Di Awaaz newsroom in July 2011.

A man who tried to defend the woman from her attacker was injured.

Singh, who was arrested at the scene, had originally been charged with first-degree murder, but admitted to second-degree as his trial was set to start.

Bhangu married in 2009, shortly after arriving in Canada from India, but she had separated from her husband several months before her death. (CKNW, The Canadian Press)
