Sicamous recovery from 2012 floods threatened by high water in Alberta

SICAMOUS, B.C. – The Shuswap community of Sicamous, B.C., is feeling the pain of flood-ravaged southern Alberta, in part because the region, midway between Kamloops and Revelstoke, endured devastating flooding last year.

But Shuswap Mayor Darrell Trouton worries area residents could suffer again this year, without seeing a single washout.

He says Sicamous is a tourist community relying heavily on income from Alberta visitors.

Sicamous has doubled the number of events planned for the region this summer in hopes of making a healthy recovery following the troubled summer of 2012.

Trouton says residents’ hearts in Sicamous go out to southern Albertans trying to rebuild from the worst flooding in a century.

But he fears the ripple effect from Alberta’s floods could wash out his community’s plans to put its economy back on solid footing. (CHNL)
