VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Canucks have hired John Tortorella as their new head coach.
The 55-year-old Tortorella was recently fired by the New York Rangers after they lost the Eastern Conference semifinals to the Boston Bruins in five games.
He replaces former Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault, who was named head coach of the Rangers last week.
Tortorella has been a head coach in the NHL since 2001. He led the Tampa Bay Lightning to a Stanley Cup championship in 2004 and was awarded the Jack Adams trophy that year.
As head coach of the Rangers for the past five seasons, Tortorella led New York to the playoffs three times.
