Safety on Okanagan Lake enhanced with launch of new rescue boat

PENTICTON – Members of the Penticton Fire Department proudly demonstrated their new rescue watercraft on Okanagan Lake this afternoon.

The new rescue boat replaces an aging zodiac, providing firefighters with a bigger, faster and more sophisticated platform from which to provide rescue on Okanagan Lake.

Two jet ski rescue boats, which are permanently stationed on Skaha Lake, were also on hand this afternoon's demonstration.

Penticton fire chief Larry Watkinson says the department’s response time to incidents on Okanagan Lake can be measured in seconds now, rather than minutes. The boat will be stationed at the Okanagan Lake Marina through the summer months.

“We’ve got both lakes completely covered,” Watkinson says, adding the boat came in on budget.

The $200,000 self-bailing, double-hulled, double-jetted craft is outfitted with a 600 horsepower engine, capable of rapid acceleration to more than 60 miles per hour, in addition to having high performance stopping and turning capabilities.

The rescue craft has more room and more comfort  for patients and firefighters, and provides a safer means from which to effect a rescue than the department’s old zodiac, the fate of which the fire department has not yet decided.

The department participated in a fundraising drive earlier this year to raise the funds not covered by the City to purchase the boat.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
