A 55-year-old Vancouver man is in custody after he was caught stealing a Kamloops city bus this past weekend.

At around 9:40 p.m. Saturday, April 25, officers were called to a report of collision between a city bus and a pickup truck in the 500 block of Landsdowne Street.

The suspect had stolen the bus while the driver had stepped away, RCMP said in a media release issued, April 30.

He drove the bus into the back of a pickup truck that was heading westbound on Landsdowne. No one was hurt.

Steven Mehlenbacher, 55, of Vancouver was arrested and held in custody, RCMP said.

Mehlenbacher is facing charges of motor vehicle theft, dangerous operation of a conveyance and theft, according to court documents. He’ll be back in court, May 5, for a bail hearing.
