City a step closer to Daily News building demolition

KAMLOOPS – By late fall, the former Daily News building may complete its $1 million transition into a parking lot. 

At tomorrow's June 27 city council meeting, staff will recommend awarding the almost half a million dollar demolition contract to Dakota Reclamators Ltd.

The budget for the project comes from a capital account with more than $1.1 million set aside for the Daily News site demolition, according to a report prepared by city staff.

On top of the demolition cost, the project budget includes funds for the interim parking lot and landscaping, along with design, project management, contract administration and contingencies.

The report gives a timeline of about 12 weeks for demolition and other work on site.

Weather permitting, the building will be levelled and a parking lot will be built by late fall. If the weather is problematic, staff say the lot can be covered in gravel and finished in spring 2018.
