Kansas City jazz singer Kevin Mahogany dies
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Jazz singer Kevin Mahogany, renowned for his broad baritone voice, has died at age 59.
Mahogany’s sister, Carmen Julious, told KCUR-FM Radio that her brother died Sunday. A cause of death was not disclosed.
Mahogany released about a dozen records dating to his debut, “Double Rainbow,” in 1993. He toured with performers such as T.S. Monk, the Ray Brown Trio and Marlena Shaw, and performed in Robert Altman’s 1996 movie, “Kansas City.”
He also taught at the University of Miami and the Berklee College of Music in Boston. In addition to singing, he played the saxophone and clarinet.
Mahogany was a native of Kansas City, Missouri. He moved back to his hometown from Miami in August, after the unexpected death of his wife, Allene.
