Memorial benches for Kamloops hit-and-run victim in place

KAMLOOPS – Two new benches have been erected in the memory of a Kamloops teen killed when she was hit by a car on her way to the gym.

Jennifer Gatey was walking to a bus stop near her home in Aberdeen when she was hit and killed instantly by a car Nov. 4 last year.

Now a bench has been erected at the bus stop she was headed to and a second outside Pacific Way Elementary School for people like her father to take a break and remember the 16-year-old high school student.

Fundraising efforts raised nearly $6,000 for the benches through the website GoFundMe.

Jason Gourlay of Kamloops is facing multiple charges in Gatey’s death, including failing to stop at an accident causing bodily harm and attempting to pervert, defeat or obstruct justice.

He’s currently in custody awaiting a court date.
