Froome looks to gain time on rivals as riders set of on time trial for 11th stage of Tour

AVRANCHES, France – The 11th stage of the Tour de France has started Wednesday with riders embarking on an individual time trial, with overall leader Chris Froome among the favourites.

Overall standings are reversed to designate the starting order, meaning Froome goes last.

Kazakh rider Dmitriy Muravyev was the first to start the 33-kilometre (20.5-mile) route in Normandy from Avranches to the medieval walled city of Mont-Saint-Michel.

Froome finished runner-up overall to Tour winner Bradley Wiggins last year and second behind Wiggins in the time trial.

The 28-year-old Froome is faster than any of his main rivals and looks to strengthen his lead.

Valverde is second overall, 1 minute, 25 seconds behind Froome. Two-time Tour champion Alberto Contador started the day 1:51 back in sixth.
