KABUL – A local official says that Afghan special forces troops have liberated more than 60 prisoners from a Taliban prison in the southern province of Helmand.
Provincial Governor Hayatullah Hayat said Friday that Afghan Army commandos and members of the country’s elite counter-terrorism unit raided a private home in the Nawzad district, acting on an intelligence report. Two Taliban militants were killed and three wounded in the ensuing battle. A statement said there were no casualties among the government troops.
Hayat said the prisoners were a mixture of civilians and members of the Afghan security forces.
