Doctor say killer of Delta, B.C., girl is high risk and should get adult term

SURREY, B.C. – A forensic psychiatrist says the man who murdered a Metro Vancouver teenager in an attempted sexual assault needs indefinite supervision because he can’t control his behaviour.

A court in Surrey, B.C., heard that before killing 15-year-old Laura Szendrei (ZEN’-dree) in September 2010, the Delta, B.C., man also committed sexually-motivated attacks against three other women.

The man, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, was 17 years old at the time so his name can’t be published until the court decides if he’ll be sentenced as an adult.

Dr. Paul Janke (YUN’-kee) told the sentencing hearing that the man requires intensive treatment because his pattern of violent sexual behaviour escalated within a few months, and he didn’t appear to be distressed about having killed someone.

Janke says the man needs an adult prison term because of the severity of his crime and the high potential that he’ll offend again.

Another forensic psychiatrist already told the court that the young offender is a high risk to reoffend, and that he would receive better treatment if he was sentenced as an adult.
