Former Fox network reality guru Mike Darnell joining Warner Bros. Television Group

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Warner Bros. Television Group says it has hired former Fox network reality chief Mike Darnell to serve as president of its unscripted and alternative programming.

The company says Darnell will have oversight of first-run syndicated series produced by Telepictures Productions and unscripted prime-time TV programming produced by Warner Horizon Unscripted Television.

Thursday’s announcement comes just weeks after Darnell said he was ending a colorful and mostly successful 18-year stay at Fox. There he oversaw programs including “American Idol,” ”So You Think You Can Dance” and “World’s Scariest Police Shootouts.”

The 51-year-old Darnell is considered by admirers and detractors as having played a major role in the explosion of reality TV. He says he “can’t wait to get started” in the new job.
