TORONTO – The Canadian dollar closed at 96.38 cents U-S, up 36-100ths from Wednesday’s close.

The S-and-P/T-S-X composite index jumped 60.08 points to 12,628.85.

Volume at 4:15 p.m. Eastern Time was 354.06 (m) million shares.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 78.02 poins to 15,548.54.

The Standard and Poor’s 500 rose 8.46 points to 1,689.37.

Both indexes closed to record highs.

In the New York Mercantile Exchange, the gold futures contract for August rose six dollars, 70 cents U-S to 1,284 dollars, 20 cents per ounce.

The crude contract for August gained one dollar, 56 cents U-S to 108 dollars, four cents per barrel.
