Surrey RCMP shooting of knife-wielding man prompts independent investigation

SURREY, B.C. – B.C.’s independent police watchdog has been called to a police-involved shooting in Surrey.

The incident occurred shortly after 10 on Thursday night as Surrey Mounties investigated a suspected arson in the Bridgeview neighbourhood, not far from the Scott Road SkyTrain station.

An RCMP release says an officer was approached by a man with a knife.

According to police, the man ignored orders to drop the weapon and continued to walk toward the officer, who shot and injured the suspect.

The unidentified man is in hospital in serious condition, while the officer is unhurt.

The Independent Investigations Office has now taken over the case, as it probes all police-involved incidents where serious injury or death occur.
