Poll reveals less than half of regional residents use library services

PENTICTON – At least one regional district director would like to see residents use the library more.

The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen board of directors heard the results of this year’s citizen survey at yesterday’s regular board meeting and it's not flattering.

Osoyoos Director Sue McKortoff took notice of the low number of residents using the library system — just 46 per cent of those surveyed.

“I looked at my tax requisition and I paid $121 for library service. There aren’t that many people using our libraries, I hope people will start,” she said.

Regional district staffer Candace Gartner said 400 individuals were canvassed by phone and online for the 2017 survey provided a “scientifically representative sample” of regional district residents' thoughts on a number of regional concerns.

Residents rated the district’s most important issues as being water supply and quality, jobs, crime, safety and the economy, Gartner revealed. Affordable housing was also high on the list.

Sixty-three per cent of residents would like to see the same level of services delivered and leave their taxes unchanged, while 70 per cent said they would pay a higher fee to use adjacent municipal services and facilities.

Residents expressed most satisfaction with the district’s curbside and recycling services.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
