Funeral to be held for 18-year-old man shot dead by Toronto police
TORONTO – A family friend of an 18-year-old man who died after being shot by Toronto police says his “devastated” parents are barely able to eat as the family prepares for a funeral.
Joseph Nazar says friends have been trying to feed Sammy Yatim’s mother spoonfuls of soup but she’s too grief-stricken to eat.
Yatim’s death on a city streetcar last Saturday has sparked public outrage and debate about police use of force.
On Monday, hundreds of people protested for justice in the young man’s death.
Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating the incident and says Yatim died after he was shot multiple times and a Taser was used.
Yatim’s parents were out of town when he died and Nazar says his 17-year-old sister identified the body.
A viewing will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and a funeral will follow on Thursday at 11 a.m.
