UN experts given green light to investigate three alleged chemical weapons attacks in Syria

The United Nations says U.N. experts will travel to Syria as soon as possible to investigate three alleged chemical weapons attacks.

U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said Wednesday the green light for the investigation followed last week’s visit to Damascus by U.N. disarmament chief Angela Kane and the head of the chemical weapons investigation team, Ake Sellstrom, and “the understanding reached with the government of Syria.”

Nesirky said the experts will visit Khan Al-Assal outside Aleppo, which was under attack by government forces Wednesday after its capture by rebels last week. The government and rebels blame each other for a purported March 19 chemical attack on the village that killed at least 30 people.

Nesirky did not give any details of the other two incidents to be investigated.
