‘Matilda the Musical’ says goodbye to Bertie Carvel and Lauren Ward, both Tony nominated

NEW YORK, N.Y. – “Matlida the Musical” is losing its two British imports — Bertie Carvel and Lauren Ward.

The actors, both nominated for Tony Awards this year, will play their final show Sept. 1. Carvel, who plays the sinister Miss Trunchbull, will be replaced by Craig Bierko, and Ward’s role of Miss Honey will be taken over by Jill Paice.

Carvel and Ward had originated their roles in the West End and joined the Broadway show when it opened this year.

Bierko’s Broadway credits include “The Music Man,” ”Thou Shalt Not” and “Guys & Dolls.” Paice’s credits include Broadway’s “The 39 Steps” and off-Broadway in “Death Takes a Holiday.” She originated the role of Laura Fairlie in “The Woman in White” on Broadway and the West End.
