Stock car driver dies during finale of Prince Edward Island speedway race

QUEENS COUNTY, – A man is dead after his vehicle crashed during the finale of a pro stock car race.

RCMP say the 30-year-old man from Riverview, N.B., was taking part in a 100-lap competition hosted Saturday at the Oyster Bed Speedway race track, about 15 kilometres north of Charlottetown.

Police say the man’s car flipped onto its roof during the 98th lap.

Mounties say the driver began removing his own safety equipment while suspended upside down after the crash, but the effort somehow strangled him, leading to his death.

Police say reasonable safety protocols were followed during the race.
