New York boys, 13 and 11, drown on Dominican family visit

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Two young brothers from New York City drowned in a river in the Dominican Republic while visiting relatives in the Caribbean country, authorities said Monday.

The boys, 13 and 11 years old, were with family members Sunday when the younger child began struggling and his older brother tried to save him, said Francisco Arias, director of the Civil Defence agency for the northern region of the country.

There was no lifeguard on duty and both boys were dead by the time authorities arrived at the scene along the Amina River, about 120 miles (190 kilometres) north of Santo Domingo, Arias said.
