VANCOUVER – Books on assisted death and a troubled First Nation reserve are among the finalists for the 2017 BC National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction.

“A Good Death: Making the Most of Our Final Choices” (Patrick Crean Editions, HarperCollins Publishers Ltd.) by Montreal-born, Toronto-based Sandra Martin made the cut for the short list on Thursday.

Also on the list is Toronto-based journalist Alexandra Shimo for “Invisible North: The Search for Answers on a Troubled Reserve” (Dundurn Press), about an E. coli outbreak on the Kashechewan First Nation.

Montreal-based Taras Grescoe is in the running for “Shanghai Grand: Forbidden Love and International Intrigue on the Eve of the Second World War” (Harper Avenue, HarperCollins Publishers).

And Robert Moor of Halfmoon Bay, B.C., is a finalist for his debut book, “On Trails: An Exploration” (Simon & Schuster).

Jury members Hal Wake, Jan Walter and John Burns read 141 books submitted by 46 publishers from across Canada.

Now in its 13th year, the annual award was established by the British Columbia Achievement Foundation.

The jury will announce the winner in Vancouver on Jan. 26.
