Coroner names two mountain climbers who died on B.C. treks
VICTORIA – The B.C. Coroners Service has released the names of two experienced mountain climbers who died in separate accidents in the past week.
Richard Lewis Gebert, aged 60, of Carmel, Maine, had been climbing for several weeks in and around Jasper National Park when he fell off Mount Redoubt.
The coroner says he fell a significant distance while rappelling and his body was recovered by Parks Canada safety specialists last Thursday.
In a separate incident, Ferdinand Taxbock, aged 71, was climbing with two other people in the Bugaboo Mountains south of Golden.
He lost his footing on loose rock and fell about 50 metres and died at the scene on Monday.
The coroners service says investigations into both deaths are continuing.
