TORONTO – Recently retired Canadian hooker Ray Barkwill is joining the coaching staff of Canada’s under-18 rugby team for its July international series.
The 38-year-old native of Niagara Falls, Ont., who won 56 caps between 2012 and 2018, retired last month for medical reasons after a nerve injury sustained during November’s World Cup repechage tournament in France.
“Ray is one of the most inspirational players to wear the Canadian jersey and his experience will undoubtedly bring strong leadership to our team as we look to grow the next generation of rugby talent,” Canada under-18 coach Mike Curran said in a statement.
The Canadian under-18 team will play its U.S. counterpart at Brentwood College on Vancouver Island in a three-game series July 7, 10 and 14.
