Upper Nicola Band leading healing walk from Kamloops to Quilchena

KAMLOOPS – The Upper Nicola Band is leading a healing walk today from the Kamloops Indian Band residential school to Quilchena.

The band says on its Facebook page the walk, called "Calling Our Spirits Back", will include residential school survivors and intergenerational survivors.

People will be walking, running, canoeing and horseback riding during the journey. The event started with a breakfast this morning, followed by an opening ceremony before the walk began. Walkers will make it to Quilchena by this evening and the journey will wrap up on Sunday.

The provincial government says in a news release that drivers should expect delays on the Red Bridge in Kamloops between 11 a.m. and noon today, Sept. 22.

It will be closed to vehicle traffic for about an hour, excluding pedestrians and cyclists. During the closure, drivers are advised to cross the South Thompson River via Highway 5.

There also may be delays this afternoon and Saturday, Sept. 23 on Highway 5A, as the walk proceeds to Douglas Lake Road.
