MILWAUKEE – The Latest on a reckless homicide charge being filed against a Milwaukee police officer who shot and killed a black man in August, sparking two nights of rioting on the city’s north side: (all times local):

The cousin of a man shot to death by a Milwaukee police officer says he’s not happy that bail was set for the now-former officer.

Dominique Heaggan-Brown had his first court appearance Friday after being charged with reckless homicide a day earlier. Heaggan-Brown shot and killed 23-year-old Sylville Smith in August, setting off two days of riots on the city’s north side.

Thaddeus Ashford, a cousin of Smith, told reporters after the hearing that Heaggan-Brown doesn’t deserve a chance at the $100,000 bail set by a court commissioner. Ashford also said the 60-year maximum sentence for reckless homicide is too light.

He says Heaggan-Brown is getting favourable treatment.

Heaggan-Brown was fired in October after he was charged in an unrelated sexual assault case.

A Wisconsin prosecutor says he’s confident in the case he’s bringing against a Milwaukee police officer who shot and killed a black man in August.

Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm filed a reckless homicide charge Thursday against Dominique Heaggan-Brown in the death of 23-year-old Sylville Smith.

A criminal complaint says Smith had a handgun when Heaggan-Brown shot him the first time, but no longer had his gun when Heaggan-Brown fired a second shot into his chest, killing him.

Chisholm says he consulted use-of-force experts before filing the charge.

He spoke after Heaggan-Brown, who was fired in October over an unrelated charge, made his first court appearance Friday. A judge set bail at $100,000.

A former Milwaukee police officer is set to appear in court after being charged with reckless homicide in the slaying of a black man.

Dominique Heaggan-Brown is charged in the Aug. 13 death of 23-year-old Sylville Smith, a shooting that sparked two days of rioting on Milwaukee’s north side. His first court appearance is Friday.

Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm said police body-camera video showed that Smith had a gun in his hand when Heaggan-Brown fired a first shot that hit Smith in the bicep. Chisholm said Heaggan-Brown’s second shot to Smith’s chest came after Smith was down and no longer had a gun. The shots were fired in less than two seconds.

Heaggan-Brown was fired in October after he was accused in an alleged sexual assault.
