Puerto Rico reports 2nd death tied to Zika-related condition

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Health officials in Puerto Rico say a 75-year-old man infected with Zika has become the second person to die from a paralysis condition linked to the mosquito-borne virus.

Authorities said Friday that the man died this month after developing complications from Guillain-Barre. They noted he had previous health issues including diabetes, asthma and a history of cancer.

The first victim was a man between 35 and 45 years old who died in July after contracting Zika and developing Guillain-Barre.

There are 22,358 people with Zika, including 1,871 pregnant women. This is of concern to health officials who anticipate babies being born with severe birth defects.

A total of 170 people infected with the virus have been hospitalized. Two people who had Zika coupled with other unrelated medical conditions have died.
