Stocks trade mixed on Wall Street; Apple loss pulls down Nasdaq index

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Stocks are trading mixed on Wall Street as a big decline in Apple pulled down the Nasdaq composite index.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose and the Standard & Poor’s 500 index inched higher.

The flattish trading followed two days of strong gains. After a tough August, stocks have risen in recent days, including six days in a row of gains for the S&P 500.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index was up a point, or 0.1 per cent, to 1,685 in midday trading Wednesday.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 84 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 15,274.

The Nasdaq fell 10 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 3,718 points.

Traders at the New York Stock Exchange observed a moment of silence on the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
