Halloween happenings are everywhere in the South Okanagan this weekend

PENTICTON – There’s lots of opportunity to get a fright this weekend as Halloween activities in Penticton and the South Okanagan begin as early as today.

The Penticton Library is inviting kids aged five to 12 for some spine-chilling fun at the library’s Haunted Halloween celebration on Friday, Oct. 27, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Listen to spooky stories, do creepy crafts and a watch a petrifying puppet show are all just part of a lineup of horrible happenings. Come in a costume or as you are. The event is free. For more information, call Julia Cox at 250-770-7783, or ask in the children’s library.

The Haunted Landing Haunted House and Mini-golf event runs for four nights from Friday, Oct. 27 to Monday, Oct 30, with less haunted (suitable for children) and fully haunted venues. There’s a new haunted hotel to go along with some haunted mini-golf this year as well. The fun runs from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. each night, at a cost of $10 at the LocoLanding Adventure Park.

The Penticton Shooting Sports Association presents the 2017 Exploding Pumpkin Bonanza, next Saturday, Nov. 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Hit a pumpkin and if it explodes you’ll win a prize. Ten dollars buys five rounds with an SKS, subsequent rounds are $1. Bring your own gun or have one provided for you. If you want to use your own rifle, you can buy 20 shots for $20. Oliver Parks and Recreation presents Scareview, Saturday, Oct. 28 from 6 to 9 p.m., a family activity-filled event with candy, carnival games, popcorn and a DJ dance party at the Oliver Community Centre. For more information, call: 250-498-4985, or visit www.oliverrecreation.ca

Covert Farms Pumpkin Patch is open daily from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at 330 Covert Place in Oliver. On Saturday, Oct. 28 and Sunday, Oct. 29 the patch will be the scene of Halloween games including haunted mini golf.  Smokies, hot dogs, s’mores, hot chocolate and popcorn will be available, along with a games area and a jumping  pillow. On Tuesday, Oct. 31, join Gary McDougall for some spooky Okanagan stories during the Brown Bag Lecture event at the Penticton Museum and Archives, from noon until 1 p.m. Admission is by donation, suggested at $2 for adults, $1 for children. For more information, call: 250-490-2454.

Cherry Lane Mall offers indoor trick or treating on Oct. 31 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Cherry Lane Shopping Centre. Participating stores will be handing out treats, and Chameleon Entertainment will provide a special presentation.

The Downtown Penticton Association presents Nightmare on Front Street on Tuesday, Oct. 31, with a costume parade at 4 p.m. followed by a Halloween party from 4 to 6 p.m. on Front Street.

There will be prizes awarded for the most original costume, cutest costume, best themed group and best dressed pet.

Hot dogs and hot chocolate available by donation.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
