Canadian author Alice Munro wins $10,000 Harbourfront Festival Prize

TORONTO – Canadian author Alice Munro has won the $10,000 Harbourfront Festival Prize.

Munro was selected for the prize by a jury composed of Quill & Quire publisher Alison Jones, Toronto Star editor Dianne Rinehart and International Festival of Authors director Geoffrey E. Taylor.

Established in 1984, the prize has previously been awarded to such writers as Dionne Brand, Wayson Choy and the late Paul Quarrington.

The 82-year-old Munro most recently published the short story collection “Dear Life.”

The decorated author has previously won such prestigious awards as the Man Booker International Prize, the Commonwealth Writers Prize and the Scotiabank Giller Prize.

The award will be presented on Nov. 2 at the Fleck Dance Theatre in Toronto.

“I am thrilled to be named this year’s winner of the Harbourfront Festival Prize,” Munro said in a statement. “To be recognized in this way by IFOA and to be counted amongst the Prize’s accomplished recipients is truly an honour.”
