NYC Opera online fundraising campaign fails; bankruptcy filing expected this week

NEW YORK, N.Y. – New York City Opera’s goal to raise $1 million from online contributions on Kickstarter.com has failed, and the company is expected to file for bankruptcy this week.

The company announced Sept. 12 that it needed $7 million by the end of September and said it hoped to raise $1 million of that on Kickstarter.com.

A total of $301,019 from 2,108 donors was pledged on the website, which posted a notice early Tuesday that “funding for this project was cancelled by the project creator.”

City Opera, which began performances in 1944, said last week it intended to file for bankruptcy and cancel the remainder of its 2013-14 season unless it raised the $7 million by Sept. 30. As of last Thursday, the company said just $1.5 million had been pledged.
