Image of Asia: Praying at Hazratbal shrine in Kashmir

In this photo by Mukhtar Khan, Muslims pray early in the morning in observance of the Martyr Day of Hazrat Ali, cousin of the Prophet Muhammad, at the Hazratbal shrine in Srinagar, the main city in Indian-controlled Kashmir. The festival coincides with the 21st day of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month in which the devout refrain from eating, drinking and smoking during the day. The lakeside Hazratbal shrine is Islam’s holiest in India’s portion of the mostly Muslim region.
