South Okanagan ski resorts fire up the lifts for another season

PENTICTON – The snow has returned to South Okanagan mountains, which means the region’s two ski areas are ready to open.

Apex Mountain Resort, a 30-minute drive west of Penticton, opened today, Dec. 6. The triple chair, T-bar and magic carpet will be operating from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with lift tickets discounted 50 per cent until more terrain opens.

The resort, which has had 24 cm of new snow in the past week, will be operating seven days a week, starting today.

Baldy Mountain Resort announced earlier this week the mountain will open this Friday, Dec. 8 with the operation of the Sugarlump chair and magic carpet.

A lack of snow at higher elevations means the Eagle chair won’t be in operation, General Manager Andy Foster says.

Opening weekend’s ticket prices will be reduced, with adult tickets at $38, seniors over 65 at $19, and youth seven to 15 at $24. Kids six and under ski for free.

Baldy Mountain is located 35 kilometres east of Oliver.

For more information, check the new Baldy Mountain website.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
