2 killed by gas leakage in Indian aircraft carrier
NEW DELHI – An Indian navy sailor and a civilian worker were killed Friday by a toxic gas leak in the sewage plant on board India’s sole aircraft carrier, a navy spokesman said.
Capt. D.K. Sharma said the Russian-built “INS Vikramaditya” carrier has been undergoing maintenance work at a naval base in southern India. There was no other damage to the carrier.
INS Vikramaditya is at present the only aircraft with the Indian navy after the recent decommissioning of another carrier.
Another aircraft carrier “INS Virat” is scheduled for commissioning by the end of 2018.
India’s navy has been plagued by accidents in recent years that have raised safety concerns and Navy chief Adm. D.K. Joshi resigned in 2014 to take responsibility for a series of accidents.
One of the the navy’s Russian-made diesel-powered submarines, the INS Sindhurakshak, caught fire after an explosion and sank at its home port in Mumbai in 2013, killing all 18 sailors on board.
