Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger to shuffle cabinet, ‘reset’ inner circle

WINNIPEG – Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger is shuffling his cabinet today.

The change comes halfway through the NDP’s fourth consecutive mandate, and at a time when the government’s popularity has dropped due to a sales tax increase.

The premier’s office has hinted the shuffle will be significant, calling it a “reset” of the inner circle.

Political science professor Paul Thomas at the University of Manitoba has said Finance Minister Stan Struthers may be moved in order to have someone new in charge of defending the tax hike.

The shuffle may allow some older ministers to step aside, if they are not running in the next election, in order to make way for younger politicians.

The new cabinet will be announced at 10:45 a.m. Central time.
