Snowfall warning for Coquihalla Highway

MERRITT – The Coquihalla Highway is going to get a dump of snow tonight and tomorrow, just in time to make weekend travel to and from the Lower Mainland a challenge.

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning with up to 25 centimetres expected to fall on Highway 5 between Merritt and Hope.

Forecasters say a persistent southwesterly flow will funnel moist air into the region over the next 24 hours and when it combines with plummeting freezing levels will bring periods of snow.

Up to 15 cm of snow is forecast tonight with another 10 cm expected on Saturday.

The warning reminds people to adjust their driving with changing road conditions and prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions on the impacted routes.

“If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop,” the warning says.
