Expansion set for Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – An expansion of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg is slated to begin in April.

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation says construction will mark the end of a $40 million capital campaign.

It will be the first large-scale expansion of the building since it opened in 1985. It houses the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum and the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. They display American folk art and British and American fine and decorative arts from 1670-1840.

Construction will add another 65,000 feet, expanding gallery space by about 22 per cent.

The project is part of the foundation’s larger $600 million fundraising campaign. Other future projects include preservation of the area’s buildings, gardens and landscapes.
