Former chief of Musqueam First Nation dies
VANCOUVER – B.C.’s premier is paying tribute to former Musqueam First Nation Chief Ernie Campbell who has died.
Christy Clark’s office issued a statement confirming Campbell’s death saying he was a tireless advocate who always conducted himself with dignity.
The statement did not say when Campbell died.
The longstanding former First Nations leader had served in the Vancouver area for over a decade before stepping down from his position last year.
Campbell was at the forefront of a landmark deal with the provincial government that saw the transfer of several parcels of land back to the Musqueam in 2008.
He was also most recently known for his active role in a campaign to protect what the Musqueam say is an ancient burial site from condo development in Vancouver.
New Democrat leader Adrian Dix also issued a statement calling Campbell an inspirational leader and a positive force in the province.
It wasn’t immediately known how old Campbell was.
