NWT cancels Amber Alert for boy believed taken from Alberta, but remains missing

An Amber Alert for a missing six-year-old boy has now been cancelled in the Northwest Territories, a day after RCMP in Alberta and British Columbia cancelled alerts in those provinces for the child.

Lanakai Morrison remains missing, however, and the NWT Alert website says anyone with information on his whereabouts should call 911 or their local police immediately.

The search for the boy began after police said he was taken Tuesday from Valhalla Centre, an Alberta hamlet roughly 63 kilometres northwest of Grande Prairie, Alta.

But Alberta RCMP said late Friday afternoon that they were cancelling their alert while continuing to investigate the abduction, and Mounties in B.C. also cancelled the alert there, too.

It’s believed the child is with his mother, 35-year-old Krista Morrison; her partner, 35-year-old Daniel Ludwig; and four-year-old Karl Morrison.

On Saturday, the NWT Alert website said the boy was believed to be travelling through northern B.C. and possibly into the N.W.T or the Yukon, and that police were still investigating his abduction.

Mounties said the boy was spotted Wednesday morning in Fort St. John, B.C., and that there were several sightings of him in the province.

Alberta RCMP said their alert was cancelled as “there’s no reasonable expectation the public, in Alberta, will be able to action the instructions in the alert.”

They did not provide details or answer phone calls seeking clarification.

B.C. RCMP also did not provide an explanation or an update when it cancelled its alert, and have not responded to an email request for clarification.

Lanakai is described as white, with a slight build, light brown hair, and brown eyes.

Police were initially looking for a black 2015 Toyota Tundra, but it was found by officers.

RCMP said it’s believed the couple changed vehicles and are driving a 2006 red Ford F350, with Alberta licence plate CXW8820.

They have said people should not approach the vehicle or suspects.
