Pair who tried to smuggle ecstasy from Vancouver to Sydney get 3 years in prison
VANCOUVER – Two people caught trying to smuggle almost eight kilograms of the drug ecstasy from Vancouver to Sydney, Australia, have been sentenced to three years in prison.
Michel Tremblay and Nadine Prevost were convicted in April of trying to export the illegal drug MDMA, also known as ecstasy.
B.C. Supreme Court heard the two weren’t able to give sensible answers to questions about their travel plans and were tagged for a secondary search by Canada Border Services officers.
Their luggage was removed and X-rayed and the drug was found in packages inside false bottoms in their suitcases.
In a decision released today on the court’s website, Justice Gregory Fitch said both people willingly became drug couriers for what they thought would be quick economic gain.
Fitch refused to grant conditional sentences as requested by defence lawyers, ordered Tremlay and Prevost to provide DNA samples and banned them from possessing weapons for 10 years.
