CAS rejects Alex Schwazer’s request to lift provisional ban

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – The Court of Arbitration for Sport says it has dismissed a request by 2008 Olympic race walking champion Alex Schwazer to lift his provisional ban from competition over a new doping allegation.

The Italian athlete, who was banned for three years and nine months after testing positive for EPO before the 2012 Olympics, returned to competition and won the 50-kilometre event at the world championships in Rome in May.

He was provisionally suspended July 8 by the IAAF after a May 12 retest of a Jan 1 sample showed positive traces of steroids.

Schwazer appealed with CAS on July 14.

CAS said Tuesday it will conduct “an expedited arbitration procedure…so that a final decision on the merits can be issued as soon as possible.”
