Edmonton-based troops headed to Ukraine for training exercise

EDMONTON – A group of 30 Edmonton soldiers have left for Ukraine to be a part of Operation Unifier.

They’re part of a group of 200 soldiers from Western Canada that will relieve their counterparts from Quebec.

The Quebec troops have been in Ukraine for about a year.

During the training mission, the 3rd Canadian Division forces will be working with Ukrainian troops on marksmanship, communication, survival and ethics training.

Capt. Derek Reid says the operation is strictly non-combat.

He calls it a partnership and a win-win for both sides.

“We can learn a lot from them,” he says. “We definitely have different experiences in our two militaries, and this is a great chance to share those lessons learned, and really improve.” (CHED)
