Nova Scotia group to begin installation of tidal turbine in Bay of Fundy
HALIFAX – A giant tidal turbine is expected to be installed in the Bay of Fundy this weekend if weather and water conditions are favourable.
The Cape Sharp Tidal project says in a news release the turbine will be placed at the site near Parrsboro, N.S., using subsea cables.
The 1,000-tonne turbine is being used as a demonstration project to test the viability of tidal power in the bay, which has some of the world’s most powerful tides.
Cape Sharp Tidal is a joint venture between Emera Inc. and OpenHydro, a DCNS company.
The partnership says it eventually plans to install a pair of two megawatt in-stream tidal turbines at the testing site, which is North America’s first tidal array connected to an electrical grid.
In June, Cape Sharp Tidal paused deployment plans to allow opportunities for more consultation with fishermen and other concerned groups.
The company is one of several that plan to test different turbine technologies in the Bay of Fundy.
