The Latest: Crime scene tape taken down after shooting

DURHAM, N.C. – The Latest on a fatal police shooting in North Carolina (all times local):

6:30 p.m.

Police have begun taking down crime scene tape at a housing project in Durham, North Carolina, where a man was shot to death by a police officer.

Groups of people had gathered in different parts of McDougald Terrace, but there were no immediate signs of tension. The groups were interspersed with parents meeting children getting off school buses and guiding them underneath the yellow tape, past police officers and back to their homes.

Slowly, the groups gathered on sidewalks and in a parking lot near the shooting scene began to disperse as sunset approached. One police officer was seen taking down some of the crime scene tape adjacent to a street through the project.

Authorities say a man was fatally shot in a struggle with three police officers in a housing project in Durham, North Carolina.

Durham Police Chief CJ Davis said the struggle began when the officers with the city’s violent crime team stopped a man for questioning, and he made a sudden move toward his waistband. The statement said at least one of the three officers fired at the man after hearing a shot fired during the struggle Tuesday afternoon.

Davis says the man being questioned died and one of the officers suffered a leg injury, but not from a bullet.

The police chief says a gun that didn’t belong to the officers was found near the man’s body.

Davis says the officers were in uniform, but were in an unmarked police car.

An official says a police officer in Durham, North Carolina, was involved in a shooting at a public housing complex, but authorities were releasing few details.

Police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said in a release that the shooting happened Tuesday around 12:30 p.m. She did not say whether anyone was struck by bullets or what led to the gunfire.

Video footage from television station helicopters showed what appeared to be a body covered by white sheets.

The shooting happened in McDougald Terrace, which the Durham Housing Authority’s website says is the largest conventional public housing community in the city with 360 apartments.
