This is the fifth month in a row that Kelowna’s had the highest unemployment rate in the country, meanwhile the rate in Kamloops keeps going down.
Kelowna’s unemployment rate for September was 9.3 per cent, while Kamloops’ was 4.4 per cent, according to Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey.
At the start of the year Kelowna’s unemployment rate was 6.8 per cent and it has steadily climbed ever since. The city took the crown for the worst unemployment rate in May and hasn’t let go.
Kamloops started the year with an unemployment rate of 4.8 per cent. It climbed to 6.5 per cent in the summer and dropped down again.
The second highest unemployment rate after Kelowna is out east in Oshawa, Ont. at 8.9 per cent.
The national unemployment rate is 6.5 per cent, which is up slightly after the country lost 68,000 jobs in September.
B.C. lost 20,000 jobs in September, which was the first decline in employment for the province since March.
BC NDP incumbent candidate Adrian Dix is blaming the job loss on the U.S.
“Across the country we are seeing the impact of Trump’s trade war with 68,000 jobs lost nationally. We need to continue to stand together as Team Canada and grow an economy that’s less dependent on the United States,” Dix said in a press release.
Statistics Canada pointed to downward trends in public sector employment, mostly in education, as well as declining employment in young people ages 15 to 24.
Residents in Kelowna will have to wait until next month to see whether the city can shake this trend.
