Ontario vows to eliminate coal-powered electricity
TORONTO – Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne says her government will try to ban coal-fired electricity generation in the province.
She says the minority Liberals will introduce legislation on Monday.
Wynne says the legislation, if passed, will ensure that no Ontario station will burn coal again.
The province’s last coal-fired generation station in Thunder Bay is set to convert to biomass over the next year.
Wynne made the announcement in Toronto alongside former U.S. vice-president and environmental activist Al Gore.
The Liberals still needs the support of at least one of the opposition parties for the legislation to pass.
